Highlight Your Team’s Progress

Your boss is interested in bottom-line numbers. But numbers alone cannot show all that your team achieves. To alert your boss to your teams results, prepare a report that shines light on every aspect of team performance. Include these four parts:

An overview of what you will cover and your teams progress to date. That lets your boss put the reports contents into the proper context.

Critical performance signs–the hard numbers–that show your teams results. Dont make the boss mine the data; present the evidence so it is easy to understand. For example, prepare a table that shows gains over the past 12 months.

Assessments that analyze the data and pinpoint cause-effect relationships. That will place the results in context. Caution: Avoid editorializing. Stick to the facts and figures you can back up with solid numbers.

Recommendations and conclusions. List actions you think will improve future results. Make sure that your suggestions flow logically from the assessments you presented. Your goal is to guide the boss to draw accurate conclusions from your analysis–and to gain the boss support for your proposals.
