Increase the Confidence of Those You Lead By Controlling Your Emotions

Behaving in a bipolar way is something all business owners should avoid. I’ve had a few friends that were actually bipolar and I’m the first person to confess that we tend to use that word loosely.

If you become high-spirited quickly and then just as rapidly become low and miserable, you are likely to be described as bipolar. Great leaders are CONTROLLED-they don’t overreact nor do they under-react.

On September 11, 2001, President Bush learned that the USA was being attacked by unidentified enemies in the middle of an outing to an Elementary School. There are those who condemn him, because he went on with his visit as planned showing no emotion.

This was actually a remarkable show of control on the part of the President. Can you imagine the President of the free world jumping from his chair in alarm and rushing out of the Elementary School, leaving behind a crowd of frightened and confused children? The enemy would have ate that up!

The way we act sometimes reveals that we are feeling rage, exuberance, and displeasure. Every one of these displays of emotion demonstrate a deficiency in leadership Control and has the ability to show your weakness and cause others to question whether or not you should be their leader.

If you’re not sure how you ought to respond to specific circumstances, choose to postpone your reaction until after you have had time to consider it and come to the right conclusion about how you should respond (this works with children too if you’re a parent; you can simply say, “Don’t worry about it now; we’ll talk about it later”).

On the other hand, you don’t want to seem to not have any urgency or concern at all if a situation is bad. You want to be calm and cool headed. If you lead, you want to think clearly no matter what is happening, so the people who follow have confidence in you.
