All businesses face risks, and statistics show that more than half of newly opened small businesses will end up closing down within the first five years. There are many reasons why small businesses fail, such as strained relationships, ruined credit, financial turmoil, and personal stress, but there are ways to minimize the risks and even promote profit growth.

Different businesses have different risks. Before starting your own business, think of the potential problems and risks that your specific business could face. Write or type down these risks so that you can have something to look at. Why is writing down business risks important? Because by knowing them, you get to act on them or think about what you can do to manage them ahead of time.

A big mistake that people make is they invest many personal assets when starting up a business. This is not a good idea and one must try not to sign personal guarantees on business debts. You also have to make sure that your personal needs are taken care of first. Opening up a business might need you to get some money out of your personal savings and you might not have enough to pay for your own expenses.

What many people do when opening up their own business is make sure that they have something else on the side that generates income, such as a job-many even take loans as seed money. Just make sure that you have enough to live by. Lastly, you should never place your personal relationships on hold when opening a business. Yes, it’s going to take up a lot of your time, but never forget your friends and family. They are the people who will help you though the difficult times and even help make your business prosper.

You have to be sure that the business that you are starting is a perfect fit for your personality and lifestyle. You have to be interested in your business in order to sell it. Research on the business and check if it sells in the area-conduct a feasibility study, or pay to have one done for you. While doing so, you can check out the competition and see how they are doing. You also need to know how a business is managed. Experience and intuition are keys to your success, you don’t have to have an MBA or a diploma in business management to know how to run your business. If you feel that you need help because it’s your first time, you can get a business coach to help you.

To be very true, if the companies have to employ one of the employees in their own countries they have to spend as much as triple the amount of money they spend over the salary payment of the employees in these third world countries. There has been fixed payroll system software for these companies to pay the employees, and this payroll system varies with each country, like they have got a different system for their origin country employees and a very different one for those countries where they have outsourced their jobs to.

The whole process of human resource outsourcing has been protested by the people from the company’s origin and the native governments have been forced to pass he laws through which the outsourcing can be stopped or restricted. But still there are companies which are outsourcing their jobs. The main reason for this Human Resource Outsourcing is that the people from these countries of the third world, including India are more efficient in their job and can handle more complex situations with ease than the people from the western world.

The payroll management enterprises have been the first among the companies recruiting in between the recession period only. The recession has hit many big names, but there were a very few of those companies which weren’t affected due to the policies taken by the companies for their business and marketing. This tendency of a higher efficiency have been popular among these companies of various kinds, and they have thus decided to outsource their jobs to these countries where the cost of living is pretty low than that is there in the origin country. So they have to pay a lot less amount of salary of these employees.

The difference in the payroll system of the various countries, by the same company, has also been protested, as the people from these countries think that they have been deprived of the various facilities as well as are cheated on by the company as they are paying them a lot less. Thus, the first option to be tried out by the companies in these countries is the payroll management. The whole process of payroll management is that the companies have to make them comparatively lower in difference in those functioning countries.

Given that project management is all about changing the status quo, effective change management is critical to project success.

Whether this is the latest ‘flavour of the month’ programs that senior management rolls out, implementation of an IT system or an internally-driven team initiative, it is important that the change and expectations are effectively managed.

Current thinking indicates that good managers are the key to successful change management. In general, managers who see the need for change are usually correct in their assessment. Senge (1999) says: “companies that fail to sustain significant change end up facing crises. By then their options are greatly reduced.”

It can be quite difficult for managers to view their work on change in a holistic fashion. Personal attitudes and political agendas can lead to bias towards HR issues or IT issues specifically preventing the big picture focus.

Based on this I have constructed 10 success factors to help project managers manage change in small projects or large organisations:

Factor 1 – Plan first

Take time to understand the central need for change. Know what you are trying to do and why. Think about the links of the change to real-life problems and create a vision of what it will look like when those problems are resolved.

Factor 2 – Involve the Team

Create opportunities – especially in the early stages – to discuss change with the team. This will not only create enthusiasm for change but also be a source of ideas for improved processes and ways of communicating to others. Negotiation will be easier if the team is on board from the start.

Factor 3 – Support the Team

Introduce the change clearly to the team. Explain the current performance level and why the change is needed, what it will involve and the objectives. Reassure staff throughout the change process – particularly around issues of changing roles.

Factor 4 – Lead by Example

Showing your own commitment to the change will act as a signpost for others in the team to also commit. Make your commitment evident in the decisions you make.

Factor 5 – Put Yourself in the Team’s Shoes

Try to anticipate what will be the key issues that concern team members. Plan how you can best deal with them should they arise. Concerns will most often be about changed ways of working, new reporting structures, changes to job roles and services and unfamiliar systems or tools.

Factor 6 – Manage Resistance with Compassion

Resistance to change may be frustrating but it is a natural human reaction. Team members might resist change if they think that job security, the way the work, or work patterns will change. Managers need to source, analyse acknowledge, respond to and deal with staff concerns throughout the change process.

Factor 7 – Communication is Essential

Tailor your communication to the audience and their needs. Make it frequent and use different methods tailored to different preferences and accessibility. Methods might include one-on-one briefings, workshops, formal training programmes, advertising, briefing papers, blogs, RSS-feeds, e-mail and intranet postings.

Factor 8 – Review and Evaluate

Review and evaluation throughout the change process is vital. Continually check objectives and achievement against them. Celebrate ongoing success with the team and identify where you can improve.

Factor 9 – Know What You’re Up Against

Change fails most often due to lack of understanding of the need for change, setting unrealistic goals, poor planning, and insufficient communication. Failure to properly manage change leads to problems with trust in change in the future.

Factor 10 – Don’t Forget PM Tools

Great project managers use good tools to achieve outcomes. Tools such as SWOT, Gantt charts, Risk Assessment, Communications Planning and a realistic schedule will be useful in planning and delivering the smooth transition to success.

The Upshot

Change is all around us, and is happening every day. To some, this is exciting; they find it thrilling to be part of the action and to keep up with trends. But, to others, it can be threatening or even frightening.

As greater focus is placed on achieving business success and as projects are becoming more complex, project managers need to adopt the principles of change management in order to deliver the desired outcomes. If done right, change can be a force for ongoing innovation, growth and success. Implementing the right factors to manage change successfully gives teams and organisations new skills that set them up to be change ready in the future.

Still, this doesn’t mean production, sales, marketing, logistics, or management can just stop during such transitional change. The flow of evolution in business is paramount, and it must be considered to create smooth transitions to the next step, whatever that maybe. What happens in time of turmoil can be the difference between success and failure in any organization, agency, team, or business, regardless of size.

As a former Franchisor and business warrior, I often watched my competition go through change, and found their ensuing chaos to be my opportunity to attack in the market place and secure market share. In competition, and yes, business is competitive, one must capitalize on the opponent’s mistakes and weaknesses, and maintain strength, agility, and fluidity in its own ranks; capitalizing on strength. Welcome to the world of change management, where the stakes are high and everyone who is serious, well they are playing for keeps so;

It’s Game On!

Over the years, I’ve watched carefully at organizational challenges in my own company as well as those competitors who were often better capitalized with perhaps more seasoned executives. I found it interesting that they would often make the most basic management errors, and usually that was during times of transition in their leadership. Things can come apart and unravel at the seams if executives and business owners fail to recognize these challenges and opportunities. Okay so, let’s talk.

Over the years, I’ve written on this topic, and I’ve clipped articles from the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, and other places on the topic, even have them filed away in my little filing system here, whenever I need to use on as an example. Why you ask? It’s simple, as I said change happens and you need to be ready with chaos and crisis cause change and opportunity if you are to seize the day and win. Please understand that Change Management should not be just another buzzword.

And, you need to understand what happens with organizational capital when there is a changing of the guard, or someone shakes things up, you need to be intimately involved and not just from the point of view of a consultant trying to sell you services, but as a warrior out to win. Now then, here is my best advice to you:

Study up on this topic, and read all you can, not just from the top MBA writers but from those who have lived through it all and now can give you their experiences first hand. Please consider all this and please think on it.

There are 5 general areas of study within the field of business education: Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Business Management and Marketing. Most jobs or employment opportunities will fall into one of these areas of study.

Accounting

There are new accounting laws in place that are affecting Corporate America which has increased the demand for accountants. There are 3 main types of accountants: Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).

Companies that are hiring accountants: Accounting and Financial companies, Hospitals, Oil & Gas companies, Airline companies, Banks and Tax service companies.

Finance

Lately, the finance industry has been under a lot of stress and scrupulation from our government and rightfully so. However, the financial world is not going anywhere and most people who work in this field seem to be wealthy and happy with their jobs. Types of finance jobs include but are not limited to the following: budget analyst, real estate professional, investment banker, money market manager, financial advisor and loan officer.

Companies that are hiring financial professionals: Financial companies, tax service companies, banking institutions, long and short term loan facilities, Oil and Gas companies and money management companies.

Entrepreneurship

This field of study is growing in popularity every day. People who have an entrepreneurial mindset often have the desire to start or manage their own business. Types of entrepreneurs include restaurant owners, retail store owners, service based companies like home builders or car washes and network marketers.

Owning your own business has its many advantages. Being able to work for yourself is the obvious but there are other reasons to start your own business including: tax advantages, time freedom, unlimited income opportunities, job security, low level of stress and being able to get involved with your local community.

Business Management

This is a very broad field of study with an even broader job opportunity. Almost every industry and company in America requires some form of management. The question is which field of management would you like to be a part of.

There are low level managers, mid level managers, and upper level managers. All of which do the same things but with different levels of importance. Often times, obtaining a masters degree in addition to a bachelors degree of business management will open the doors to the upper level management positions including CEO, COO, Vice President and Executives. A business management salary varies greatly based on these different level positions.

Marketing

“What can I do with my business degree?” is an easy question to answer if you have a marketing degree in business. Again, most companies are constantly looking for marketing professionals to promote the company in new and unique ways that will lead to higher profits. Companies are more than willing to pay for quality marketers because they know that they are a good investment.

Marketing includes the fields of advertising, pricing, strategy, product development, consumer behavior and sales. Anyone who enjoys one or all of these types of marketing niches will be a great asset to an employer.

Final Thoughts

By now you should have a better understanding of what you can do with a business degree. Sadly, most people who currently have a business degree or are pursuing one will never be completely satisfied with their job. Often times the business world is a fast paced, high stressed lifestyle that can take its toll on people over time.

My suggestion is to think about the long term effects of working in the particular field of business you desire. Make sure its something you can see yourself doing not just in the next 3-5 years but over the next 10-20 years. Also, consider doing some research on top undergraduate business schools as most employers take your place of education into consideration.

Compensation is important but also think about other things like: who you will be working with, hours, benefits, stress level, physical and mental demands, personal goals and lifestyle. These are important factors when choosing the right field of business to pursue.

Whatever you decide I hope that you find success in all that you do.

The Official Definition

The British Standards Institution defines it as “…the integration of processes within an organisation to maintain and develop the agreed services which support and improve the effectiveness of its primary activities.” This essentially includes everything from design and construction, right through to the use of rooms, furniture and facilities as well as cleaning and general maintenance. In this way, it is an on-going affair which continues for the life of the building’s use. With large corporations and even large publicly owned buildings, controlled facilities management is not only essential but also complex and time consuming. This is why, with the advent of the modern PC, CAFM software has become integral part of building and business management, saving time and money.

Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) Uses in Modern Business

Quite simply, computer-aided facilities management software is designed to help FMs s to keep track of their organisations assets by linking a variety of information together electronically. Every business is different and similarly, the needs of their facilities managers will also differ, but the correct CAFM software can make all the difference providing a wealth of benefits, the most important of which are obviously money and time savings.

For a long time, the use of Excel spreadsheets was the extent of CAFM but with changing times, CAFM has moved forward to align the software capabilities with the requirements of the businesses they are supporting.

In an age when FMs, like everyone else, expect global access to information and reporting, the use of spreadsheets is essentially an inadequate out-dated approach to FM in the business world.

CAFM software helps to integrate the FM team with the core processes of the business and increases the profile within the business – ensuring that everyone is aware of the importance of the facilities management processes and team.

Properly implemented CAFM systems also allow businesses to give access to some elements of the FM system to people within the business and other departments where it historically would have been managed entirely by the FM team. For example, room and car booking may be completed by the company intranet.

Choosing the right CAFM software can make a big difference to your business – automating processes, spreading and delegating management across the company and providing comprehensive reporting and alerts processes.

>When you’re faced with change and having to do things in a new way, have you noticed that it takes longer to get things done?

When you change your mobile phone or your television, this can be really frustrating. Suddenly the buttons are in slightly different places and simple actions take longer, things that you would normally do without even thinking. Or perhaps you’ve upgraded your computer to a new version of your word processing program – now it takes longer to find your way around, and do things that used to be ‘second nature’.

The smallest changes in a process can be disruptive – a different way of filling in your expenses form, where to get the new form, understanding any new fields, what is expected, who should it go to etc. Before a change took place, you didn’t have to think about these things. You just did them automatically without really having to think about them, you had reached ‘unconscious competence’ with these activities and could achieve them competently entirely ‘on autopilot’. But suddenly, something new is thrown into the mix and now you need to think quite hard to figure out precisely what the process is and this slows you down. You’re back to an earlier stage of the learning process, and you feel as if you need to deal with it, and fast, as it’s slowing you down! Which can just lead to more frustration!

In a business management environment, it’s easy to assume that we can maintain normal levels of performance when faced with change, at any level. Very often project plans not only assume people can perform their daily tasks at the normal level but also are expected to take on extra workloads during change. This usually doesn’t work, and performance drops in spite of our best efforts. This is called the ‘learning dip’ – you can’t avoid it, but you can be aware of it and take action to minimise its impact:

• Don’t expect to sustain normal performance levels during change – allow for the dip

• Support your teams to help them through. This could be as straightforward as acknowledging that things may take a little longer

• Remember that a drop in performance at this time is not a sign of failure or incompetence

• Where frustration sets in, judgement may become clouded and mistakes can be made – set realistic expectations

• Acknowledge when performance begins to climb back and celebrate the improvement that results

The steps outlined here are really simple, but can make an enormous difference to your change programme and the results you get!
